Asia's premier business event, the IGM typically draws over 1,000 senior business executives, noted economists, and government leaders. The 2001 IGM will address the economic health of the Asia-Pacific, in light of the economic crisis in 1997 and the dramatic recovery seen in many of the affected economies.

The PBEC US Board of Directors convened for breakfast followed by an informal discussion with Dr. Y. Y. Wong, Chairman of Wye Wye Pte., a fast-growing conglomerate of regional companies, and Chairman of the PBEC Singapore member committee. Dr. Wong provided an Asian perspective on the struggling Japanese economy and its impact on the region, the Bush administration’s approach to foreign policy, and the regional ramifications of China’s accession to the WTO.
- PBEC US/PBEC China Bilateral Dinner

PBEC US and PBEC China held a bilateral dinner on April 9th. Over sixty executives attended the event, with roughly equal representation. PBEC US Vice-Chairman Jack Wadsworth of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Asia spoke about the downturn in the US economy and potential ramifications throughout the Asia Pacific region. PBEC China Chairman Yu Xiaosong, who is also Chair of the China Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), summarized the status of this year’s APEC business events. Mr. He Guangbei, Executive Vice President, Bank of China, discussed financial reforms in China and future reforms necessary for WTO accession. Boeing, The Chubb Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, and New York Life International generously sponsored the dinner.
- US Embassy Breakfast Briefing

PBEC US held a breakfast briefing for with senior officials from the US Embassy in Tokyo including Chargé d Affaires Christopher LaFleur. This off-the-record briefing provided PBEC US members new insights regarding the troubled Japanese economy and our bilateral political and trade relationship.
- Poultry Mission Conference
June 7-8, 2001 · Bogotá, Colombia
This conference, organized by the international working committee on food products, will focus on the implementation in the Americas of the value chain for poultry study completed by PBEC in 1999. A similar conference in the Philippines will take place later in the year.

PBEC US hosted a Shanghai APEC Preview Luncheon Sept. 27 in Washington, D.C., featuring remarks by Ambassador of China Yang Jiechi and Fred Bergsten, Director of the Institute for International Economics.
- Roadmap to the Future: Advancements in Agricultural Technology

This conference will continue the work begun at the Biotechnology Conference held just prior to the 2000 Hawaii IGM. The conference will highlight developments in agricultural technology that are boosting productivity and improving nutrition in the region.
- PBEC Midterm Meeting

The PBEC Working Committees and Steering Committee meet twice a year to determine PBEC policy and courses of action. Policy recommendations will be presented to APEC heads of state, who meet the following week in Shanghai.

Held concurrently with the APEC CEO Summit, this conference will feature the practical implementation of e-commerce in the region. The focus will be on the Pudong Development District.
