Continuing a long-standing tradition, PBEC US and PBEC Japan hosted a breakfast for their delegates attending the IGM. Minoru Murofushi, Chairman of ITOCHU Corporation; David McClain, Dean of the Business School of the University of Hawaii; and US Ambassador to Japan Thomas Foley spoke on the political and economic relationship between the US and Japan. Delegates from PBEC US and PBEC China participated in a bilateral breakfast meeting in Honolulu, site of the IGM. USTR Charlene Barshefsky and Ouyang Qian, Vice President of the CITIC Industrial Bank spoke to the audience of 100 business executives from both the US and China. Former Philippine Finance Secretary Addresses Joint Annual General Meeting and ASEAN Committee Breakfast

Roberto De Ocampo, former finance secretary of the Philippines, and Ernest Micek Chairma of Cargill, Inc. spoke at the PBEC US Annual General Meeting, held in Honolulu during the 2000 IGM. The AGM was held in conjunction with a multilateral breakfast of the ASEAN committees of PBEC. US-Chaired Working Committee on Food Products Holds Biotechnology Conference in Honolulu

Food Committee Chairman Ray Cesca opened the one and one-half day conference examining the role of biotechnology in Asia Pacific agriculture. Conference participants and speakers, representing a broad spectrum of the Pacific Rim economies, formulated plans for a biotechnology roadmap aimed at increasing consumer awareness on this timely (and hotly debated) subject. Noted speakers included Sue Muggleston, Science Liaison for HortResearch of New Zealand; Dr. Zhangliang Chen, Vice Chancellor of Beijing University; and Hardeep Grewal, Operations Director for Pioneer Hi-Bred in the Philippines. The keynote address was given by Mario Rodriguez, Chairman of AgroBio Mexico.
APEC E-Commerce Issues Discussed at PDS

PBEC US member company Texas Instruments hosted a Pacific Dialogue Series meeting featuring Jon Menes, Co-Chairman of the APEC E-Commerce Steering Group. Menes discussed APEC's e-commerce priorities and programs for 2000.
