President
Pacific Basin Economic Council

Dalton Tanonaka is the president of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC). He joined the non-profit group headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, in October 2002. As president, he oversees all aspects of the organization’s operation.

In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the International Secretariat, the principal office of the organization, Mr. Tanonaka has bottom-line responsibility for planning and organizing PBEC’s International General Meeting (IGM) as well as other meetings throughout the year. He works closely with the International Chairman, Board of Directors, and PBEC’s twenty regional member committees to frame and promote PBEC policy positions, and organize and implement programs and services that benefit member companies.

Founded in 1967, PBEC is the Asia-Pacific’s oldest business organization and has a membership of 1,000 of the region’s major companies in 20 economies, which have a combined work force of ten million people and revenues totalling $4 trillion.

Tanonaka was previously an award-winning journalist with CNN International in Hong Kong, serving as the anchor of the daily business program “BizAsia” and the weekly “TalkAsia.” His Asia-Pacific experience also includes anchor positions with CNBC and NHK (Tokyo).

For most of 2002, he served as Special Adviser for International Relations at the University of Hawaii, and as a Business Consulting Partner with Grant Thornton in Indonesia. Most recently, Tanonaka was a candidate for office of Lieutenant Governor of the state of Hawaii. His previous public service experience was as the Executive Director of Economic Development for the city of Honolulu in 1999.

Tanonaka earned his Bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University in 1977. He is 48 years old, born in Kohala, Hawaii, and is married with a 4-year-old daughter.
