The 1999 Mid-term Meeting of the Pacific Basin Economic Council was held in Auckland, New Zealand, from Wednesday, September 8 to Friday, September 10. It was scheduled in conjunction with the 1999 APEC CEO Summit.

This year's meeting featured several prominent speakers, including Dr. The Honorable Lockwood Smith, New Zealand Minister for International Trade, The Honorable Han Duck-Soo, Korea Minister of Trade, Christine Fletcher, Mayor of Auckland City, Sir Peter Blake, Syndicate Head of Team New Zealand (America's Cup), Ambassador Richard W. Fisher, U.S. Deputy Trade Representative, The Honorable Richard Nottage, Former Chief Executive of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Dr. Donald T. Brash, Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

The PBEC board of directors also approved policy recommendations calling on APEC to catalyze support for meaningful liberalization in the WTO, calling for full implementation of intellectual property rights obligations under the WTO, urging the inclusing of financial services reform in the next WTO round, and endorsing APEC's principles on electronic commerce.

PBEC's annual Mid-Term Meeting is an opportunity for PBEC to deliberate on, and speak out on the key issues facing the region, and to conduct the organization's internal business.
