The APEC CEO Summit, co-sponsored by the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) and the APEC CEO Summit Inc., was held in Auckland, New Zealand from Sept. 10-13, 1999. The event closed with a strong call for APEC leaders to move forward with greater resolve and urgency to accelerate trade and investment liberalization, both within APEC and the WTO.

The APEC CEO summit brought together 250 of the Asia Pacific's leading corporate executives to discuss and deliberate on the most pressing economic and business issues in the region, in advance of the APEC leaders meeting. Several APEC leaders joined in the proceedings, including President William Clinton of the United States, President Jiang Zemin of the People's Republic of China, His Excellency Kim Dae-jung, President of the Republic of Korea, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, the Honorable Dr. Ernesto Zedillo, President of Mexico, and The Right Honorable Jenny Shipley, Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The CEO Summit, encompassing two days of highly intensive and interactive roundtable discussions, as well as keynote speeches, allowed delegates to "brainstorm" solutions to some of the challenges brought on by the accelerating process of globalization.
