International Y2K Cooperation Center

The center — under the auspices of the United Nations, with funding from the World Bank — promotes increased strategic cooperation and action among governments, peoples, and the private sector to minimize adverse Y2K effects on the global society and economy.

Mission Statement:

The working committee on Technology was established on May 19, 1996 to develop programs to stimulate the development and accelerate the implementation of new technologies in the Asia Pacific region. In pursuit of this goal, the committee will:

  • Build a dedicated network of committee members from developed and developing economies that reflects the diverse interests and experiences of the PBEC membership.
  • Develop, refine, implement PBEC policy positions and work programs that reflect the private-sector consensus on actions in three areas: intellectual property rights protection (IPR), technology transfer, and human resource development (HRD).
  • Cooperate with regional and global governmental organizations such as APEC and the WTO in promoting advancements in IPR protection, technology transfer, and HRD.

Activities:

  • The working committee is active in a number of important areas. The working committee promotes the development and implementation of new technologies in the Pacific region and focuses on issues that affect the flow of technology.
  • Key issues on the committee's agenda include technology transfer, intellectual property rights, human resources development, standards and conformance, and the ITA II.
