Mr. Tadahiko Ohashi, Chairman (Japan)

A meeting of the Working Committee on the Environment was held on April 7th, 2001 with the participation of 22 members from 9 economies.

  1. Minutes

The minutes of the Working Committee meeting which convened in Singapore in November 2000 were approved.

  2. Environmental Award

    • 8 companies from 5 economies were nominated for the 3rd Award. The top 3 outstanding companies were selected as winners under the deliberation of 5 judges from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and the United States.
    • The Gold Level award would go to Osaka Gas of Japan, the Silver Level award to Ford of the United States, and the Bronze Level award to Honda of Japan.
    • The Working Committee approved the judging results and agreed to implement the 4th Environmental Award at the next International General Meeting.
    • Discussions were held relating to measures for increasing the number of applications and improving the judging procedures. Discussion results are to be reflected in the next award as follows:

      1. Measures for increasing the number of applications:

        a. Send letters directly to all 1,100 member companies and encourage them to apply for the Award.

        b. Encourage the nomination of more than one company in each economy.

        c. Grant the winners the right to use the PBEC Environmental Title Mark for a limited time. Honor the winners of the past Awards permanently by inserting their names in the brochure prepared for the Award Ceremony.

        d. Consider factors which would enhance the prestige of the Award.

        e. Disclose the reasons for the selection of winners in detail for the transparency of the Environmental Award.

      2. Review of judging procedures:

        a. The highest and lowest scores which judges give to the nominees are eliminated. The remaining scores are summed up as the final score to prevent an imbalance in the judges' scoring.

        b. Environmental performance should be assessed in light of the different situations in each economy.

  3. PBEC Tokyo Statement

    • The draft Statement on Environmental Issues has already been distributed to all member committees.
    • At the meeting of the Working Committee on April 7th, the details of the Statement were vigorously discussed by the participating members and the Statement was partially amended based on the discussion results. All important views were incorporated into the final draft. The glossary is not to be treated as an official document.
      1. Relationship between population, poverty and the environment
      2. Importance of external activities as corporate citizens
      3. Creation of sinks through forestation projects
      4. Importance of the environmental impact of the fisheries as well as agricultural and forestry industries
    • The point was made that workshops and working groups should be established under the Working Committee on the Environment in order to study practical strategies to tackle the issues identified in the Statement.
    • The study of the environmental standards of PBEC itself was proposed.
    • Our working committee will propose that the Steering Committee approve the draft Statement. Thereafter the Statement will be announced at the Tokyo International General Meeting.
    • Subsequent to the Tokyo International General Meeting, the Working Committee on the Environment aims to enter a phase of dissemination of the PBEC Statement on Environmental Issues to our member companies, governments and international organizations.
