Project Name:
Promotion of Forest and Paper Recycling

Objective:
Oji Paper’s multiple initiatives focus on the promotion of forest and paper recycling, positive development of tree-planting projects overseas, and the increased use of used- paper resources. The tree-planting initiatives are aimed toward the planting of 200,000ha of trees and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent or more by 2010. The entire Oji Paper Group also predicts raising the ratio of used paper utilization to 60 percent or more by 2005.

The company plans to continue the promotion and strengthening of ISO 14001 certification in all 17 mills and the establishment of a sophisticated management system. Parallel to the EMS is the development of new products and technologies to reduce the amount of waste and increase the amount of used paper utilized in paper production. The promotion of environmental technology transfer overseas and the implementation of PR, social and educational activities successfully promote environmental awareness.

Benefits:
The conservation benefits resulting from these initiatives include reductions in carbon dioxide emissions due to energy conservation (170,000t-CO2), and the reduction of waste sent to landfills (17,804t-CO2) and sequestration of domestic and overseas forests (4,642,000t-CO2). The cost savings from energy conservation (1,330 million yen) and excess funds obtained from recycling (1,009 million yen) are among the leading business benefits resulting from the projects.
