4th PBEC Environmental Award
Gold-Level Winner

Hyundai Motor Company

Project Name:
The Advanced Environmental Program of HMC

Objective:
Hyundai Motor Company received ISO 14001certification in March 1998, and in May 1996 Hyundai was selected for the first time as an Environment-Friendly Enterprise in the auto industry. As part of developing environmentally friendly production techniques, incentive awards are available to departments that contribute to achieving environmental objectives.

To protect against global warming and the depletion of natural resources, Hyundai improved its efforts in fuel efficiency, the development of alternative fuels, and minimizing of energy loss. To control the amount of air and water pollutants, Hyundai was able to reduce emissions by 0.2kg per vehicle in 2000 and constructed a water treatment facility capable of treating 20,000m3 of water per day. In addition, Hyundai is working to prevent environmental contamination caused by the chemicals used in the production of automobiles and for water treatment, and to control storage facilities for gasoline and other fuels. Further efforts include the reduction of waste by encouraging reuse, and improving processes and materials while preventing depletion of natural resources.

Benefits:
Hyundai Motor Company earns US$2 billion each year from environmental management. In contribution to environmental protection, more than 25,000 tons of waste materials have been recycled and reused in automobiles, construction material, detergent, wood, and glass. HMC is able to save 168 tons of packing materials per year by reducing waste. In addition, the development of the TMS (Tele Metering System) provides real-time measurement assuring optimum operating conditions and checks to ensure that legal requirements for compliance are met.
