Economic & Political Implications of the Changing Global Landscape March 17-22, 2000 Honolulu, Hawaii, USA Visit the official site: Leading Corporate Executives from Throughout Asia-Pacific to Gather in HawaiiJANUARY 25, 1999 (HONOLULU) The annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific’s most prominent business leaders will be coming to Honolulu from March 17-22, 2000. The meeting is expected to attract over 1,000 corporate CEOs and leading executives, as well as heads of government and other senior officials. The Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), a Honolulu-based international business organization representing over 1,100 companies in 20 economies throughout the Asia-Pacific, announced today that its annual International General Meeting (IGM) will take place in Honolulu in March 2000. PBEC member companies account for over US $4 trillion in global sales and employ over 10 million people. Hawaii Governor Benjamin Cayetano commented, "Hawaii is a state that means business, and the PBEC IGM will be an outstanding opportunity to enhance our state’s reputation as a first class destination not just for recreation, but also as a place for serious business." The PBEC IGM is the organization’s most important annual event, taking place over 5 days and including keynote speeches and interactive panel discussions on breaking economic, business, and strategic issues. The IGM also includes a variety of working committees which produce reports, recommendations, and statements on the most important policy issues facing the international business community, in areas as diverse as financial services regulatory reform and the environment. PBEC’s work is highly regarded, and its recommendations are often implemented by organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Participants in past PBEC IGMs include US President Bill Clinton, Philippine Presidents Fidel Ramos and Corazon Acquino, and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir, to name just a few. A significant international media contingent typically covers the IGM. According to PBEC Secretary General Robert G. Lees, "Over the 31 year history of this organization, the PBEC IGM has become the preeminent business gathering in the Asia Pacific. As the independent voice of business, PBEC’s deliberations have become a focal point for the region’s most important corporate executives, government leaders, and the international media. Bringing this event to Hawaii will benefit the entire state." Historically, countries throughout the Asia-Pacific vie each year for the right to host this prestigious meeting, but consideration is being given to make Hawaii the event’s permanent home. In 1998, the PBEC IGM was held in Santiago, Chile, and in 1999 it will be held in Hong Kong. Contact: Stephen Olson, Pacific Basin Economic Council
