An official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for two decades, Yukio Okamoto served as Director of the Security Affairs Division and Director of the First North American Division, responsible for the day-to-day management of the bilateral relationship with the United States. Other postings during his career included Political Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan in Washington and First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Cairo.
In 1991, Okamoto resigned from government service in order to open his own consulting firm. Tokyo-based Okamoto Associates, Inc. offers advice on security, trade, management, investment and economic outlook issues to Japanese multinationals, Japanese entrepreneurial companies and government-affiliated agencies.
From December 1996 to April 1998, Okamoto served as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for Okinawa Affairs. He is one of only two men to ever hold the position of Special Advisor, the highest-ranking advisory position in Japanese government. At present Okamoto is an Advisor to the Minister for Science and Technology.
Well-versed in economic and foreign policy debates, Okamoto is a familiar figure both within Japan and within the U.S. foreign policy community. He is a frequent contributor to leading Japanese newspapers and magazines and is an oft-quoted source for U.S. media.
Okamoto's book of compiled interviews with famous and notable Japanese Nippon Saisei Saizensen ("On the Leading Edge of Japan's Renewal") was published by Toshi Shuppan in 1997.
