Robert Clarke, 57, was born in Oakland, California, and moved to Hawaii in 1973. He received his Bachelor's degree in economics in 1965 and his Master's degree in finance in 1966 from the University of California at Berkeley.
Clarke joined HEI in February 1987 as Vice President of Strategic Planning and was in charge of implementing the Company's diversification strategy. Prior to joining HEI, Clarke served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Alexander & Baldwin and as Controller of Dillingham Corporation. Prior to moving to Hawaii, Clarke worked for the Ford Motor Company and for the Singer Company.
Clarke was named HEI Group Vice President - Diversified Companies in May of 1988. He was made a director of HEI in 1989. On January 1, 1991, Clarke became President and Chief Executive Officer of HEI, and in September 1998, was named Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Clarke is active in community affairs. He is the Chairman of the Advisory Board for the College of Business Administration of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is also on the boards of Aloha United Way, Hawaii Pacific University, The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii and the Straub Foundation. In addition, Clarke is the past chair and a current member of the Hawaii Business Roundtable. He is also a member of the Air Force Civilian Advisory Council, the Governor's Task Force on Science and Technology, the State Council on Revenues, the Board of Governors for the Hawaii Council on Economic Education, and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii's Tourism Council.
He is married to the former Joan Namkoong, a graduate of Kailua High School and the University of Washington. Joan is the Food Editor for The Honolulu Advertiser.
Clarke has two daughters, Erin and Megan.
