Sir Peter Blake Syndicate Head, Team New Zealand Head of Expeditions, The Cousteau Society |
Only weeks ago, Sir Peter Blake helped guide Team New Zealand to victory once again in the America's Cup race.
At the helm of Team New Zealand syndicate in 1995, Sir Peter helped win the cup that year, just the second time in the event's 144-year history that a non-American team had taken the trophy.
Sir Peter is also the incoming Head of Expeditions for The Cousteau Society, a position he will assume following his work in the defense of the America's Cup this year. There he will work closely with Society President Francine Cousteau and coordinate all expedition activities including planning, fundraising, vessel operations and maintenance oversight and management of teams and equipment.
With more than a half-million racing and cruising miles, Sir Peter is a seasoned ocean sailor. He has forged a singular reputation in ocean racing with a record-smashing non-stop round-the-world finish in 1994, and a berth in the first five Whitbread Round the World Races.
His numerous accolades include two Sportsman of the Year awards and four Yachtsman of the Year awards. He was named a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1983 for services to yachting, and received a knighthood from the Queen of England in 1991, honored with the title of Officer of the British Empire (OBE), again for services to yachting.
An outspoken environmentalist and advocate of marine education, Sir Peter is also president of the Jules Verne Association and Honorary Skipper of the Child Cancer Foundation (NZ).
