Michael J. Butcher President & CEO, Asia/Pacific Lucent Technologies

Michael J. Butcher is President and CEO for Lucent Technologies Global Services Provider in Asia/Pacific. In this role he has responsibility for all sales, marketing, operations and new business opportunities throughout Asia/Pacific, excluding China.

Prior to joining Lucent Technologies, Butcher was President, Electronic Data Systems (EDS) Australia and New Zealand and a member of the company's Asia/Pacific executive committee. He began his career in the U.K. in 1969 as a Systems Engineer. He moved to Australia in 1971 and joined Olivetti where over a ten year period he held roles in sales, sales management and marketing. His efforts saw the company become the industry leader in the banking terminal market in Australia.

Prior to joining EDS in January 1993, Butcher held roles with Datapoint Corporation, Alcatel and Wang Australia. At Alcatel he was initially National Sales Manager and for the last three years of service, General Manager, Business Systems Division. In this role he was responsible for both communication and computer products and services. At Wang he was Managing Director of the Australian operation. The operation included sales, hardware and software support services, marketing, corporate functions and a manufacturing operation.

During his period with EDS he successfully built a complex services business, including Consulting, Systems Development and Integration, and Systems Management. The South Pacific operation was the largest EDS business in the Asia/Pacific region and the A/P resource/software centre for the region was based in Australia. The EDS business grew dramatically during the four year period Butcher was with EDS.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in the U.K. and has attended various management courses including INSEAD in Paris and the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.

Butcher lives in Hong Kong with his wife Chris and their two children, Aron and Tim. He enjoys tennis, skiing and golf.
