C.D. Tam is Executive Vice President & President for Motorola Asia Pacific Region since January 1, 1999 and a member of the Motorola Management Board.
A 31-year Motorola veteran, who joined Motorola in 1969, he became the first Asian to lead Motorola Semiconductor Products in Asia Pacific as General Manager after progressing from Design Engineering, Marketing and Operations. Operating out of Hong Kong, C.D. built the Asia Pacific Semiconductor Group organization in the region into multi-billion dollar business. Strategic investments were made throughout Asia. C.D. Tam proposed and developed Asia Pacific Semiconductor headquarter site, Silicon Harbour Center in Hong Kong, incorporating IC Design and Manufacturing. Motorola IC Design Centers were also established in Taiwan and Singapore under his leadership and semiconductor manufacturing expansion in Malaysia. He was instrumental in Motorola Semiconductor startup in Tianjin, People's Republic of China.
Partnering with Motorola China Country President and other Motorola heads of communication businesses, they have made Motorola China business and hugh manufacturing complexes in Tianjin a great success. As a leader in the Hong Kong business community, he brought Motorola to the table as a major player with the Hong Kong government in many aspects of industrial, commercial and technological policy setting. During his career in Asia, Motorola has been honored with numerous awards conferred on C.D. Tam as one of the company's leading representatives in the region. He has played an active part in Hong Kong industrial activities and sits on boards and committees of several electronics and business associations.
In recognition of C.D. Tam's contribution to the community, he was elected one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong in 1984. In 1988 he received the Young Industrialist Award conferred on him by the Federation of Hong Kong Industry, and the Courvoisier Award for Business Excellence - Industry. In July 1992, he was appointed by the Hong Kong Governor as a Non-Official Justice of the Peace. Again the same year, C. D. Tam won the Executive of the Year, Hong Kong Business Awards sponsored by DHL and South China Morning Post. He was also honored with the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1992 Queen's Honours List which recognized his contributions in Hong Kong tertiary education establishments and various trade and industrial organizations. C.D. is selected as one of the "Top Ten Asian Executives" in the electronics industry in 1995 by Electronics Business Asia magazine.
In 1996, C.D. Tam moved to Austin, Texas to head SPS' Micro-Controller Group and then became Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Transportation Systems Group in 1997. Again, C.D. is the first Hong Kong Chinese to manage a product technology group.
In 1999, C.D. Tam was promoted to Executive Vice President and President and returned to Asia Pacific region. His vision is to combine the best of east and west to fulfill customers' dreams with stimulating and compelling solutions. He sees great growth and potential of Motorola and the Asia Pacific region in the wireless and broadband wire communication business and smart, embedded semiconductor business.
