I am pleased to extend you an invitation to attend the Thirty-First International General Meeting (IGM) of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), to be celebrated in Santiago, Chile, from May 22 through 27, 1998. This Meeting, entitled "Pacific Prosperity: Sustaining Momentum into the 21st Century," will deal with trade liberalization and its related challenges and opportunities, many of which I believe to be fundamental ingredients for the development of the Pacific Rim economies.

Chile is not only a Latin American country, rather, its history has always been tied to the Pacific Rim. Through time, its integration to this region has become a strategic objective towards the economic and social modernization of the country.

The 31st PBFC IGM will include many topics of great importance and interest to the entrepreneurs and Leaders from the Pacific Basin region. I would like to encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to discuss and exchange views, as well as to initiate and conduct business-all of which form part of the common goals leading us towards development.

I strongly endorse the work of the Pacific Basin Economic Council. The PBEC is the Pacific Rim's most experienced businessoriented organization; it has considerably contributed to the expansion of trade and investment in the region during the past 30 years.

In the name of the Chilean people, I welcome you to this transcendental event. I hope to see you in Santiago in May 1998.

EDUARDO FREI RUIZ-TAGLE

PRESDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHILE
