An interview with Mr. Haldane Dodd Acting Executive Director (ATAG) Air Transport Action Group
Host: Renee Pan PBEC Managing Director UK & Europe
Description: Despite the aviation sector continuing to experience a turbulent rebound from the worst crisis in its history, a major milestone was achieved during the pandemic, with a general consensus reached on net-zero carbon emissions targets for the industry. In October 2021, the global air transport industry adopted a new long-term goal to address its climate change impact by committing to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Coordinated by the Air Transport Action Group on behalf of the commercial aviation industry, the Fly Net Zero 2050 declaration confirms the commitment of the world’s major aviation industry associations (airlines, airports, air traffic management) and the largest engine makers of aircraft and engines to reduce CO2 emissions in support of the Paris Agreement to 1.5ºC. This updates an earlier industry-wide goal set in 2009 (a 50% reduction in net carbon emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels). With this new, ambitious and challenging goal for air transport, a mix of new technology – including potentially shifting to electricity and hydrogen for some shorter services; improvements in operations and infrastructure; and a transition to sustainable aviation fuel by mid-century – will provide a majority of the carbon reductions. The remaining emissions will be captured using carbon removal measures. All these efforts will be supported by accelerated efficiency measures, energy transition, and innovation across the aviation sector. The aviation industry is also heavily reliant on policy support from governments around the world to help speed up the transition process. This month we sat down with Mr. Haldane Dodd Acting Executive Director- (ATAG) Air Transport Action Group to share his thoughts and some of the summary insights from two recent reports they have conducted on related subject matter. Audio language is in dual Chinese and English.
